The theme “On our own skin” runs through stories of injustices that have marked human history. From the Inquisition, which persecuted women as witches and heretics, to violence against whole ethnic groups such as the Maya, Native Americans, and to forms of slavery, it reaches today’s discrimination against groups such as Black people, homosexuals, women, drug addicts and prisoners.

The Ammajare Festival aims to “shine” a spotlight on these persecutions, ancient and modern, through cinema, books and theatre. The goal is to reflect on new and false magic, on ongoing inquisitions and on the thin line between innocence and guilt. Not with ideological fury, but with the desire to understand how these mechanisms have repeated in history and why they still exist, leaving deep marks on lives and consciences.
