The second edition of the Ammajare Festival, organized by the Intrecci culturali association  and by the municipality of Siligo, ended with broad approval, confirming the strength of a project born to investigate the injustices of the past and recognize those that keep creeping into the present. The theme chosen for this year by artistic director Giampaolo Cassitta was “On My Skin”; it took shape from the story of Julia Carta of Siligo, accused of witchcraft at the end of the 1500s, turning an old story into a passage through which to read the mechanisms of persecution, prejudices that withstand time, and the marginalities generated by dominant powers.

The Festival invited the public to question how discrimination repeats itself in human history, from the Inquisition to violence aimed at entire communities, up to the exclusions that still today strike minorities and vulnerable groups. Alongside this reflection came public participation that shows the project’s vitality: eight municipalities collaborated to build a program that reached twenty-eight events, with nineteen book presentations and twenty authors involved, three concerts, three theatre performances and three thematic debates. More than two thousand five hundred unique spectators followed the initiatives, marking a broad and steady interest.

The festival featured in-depth moments able to combine current affairs and memory. Among the most significant, the roundtables dedicated to the situation in Gaza, hosted in Siligo in August and in Tergu in October, brought back to the center the fragility of peace and the return of tensions rooted in ancient dynamics.

The Off literary circuit offered a further chance for discussion. It crossed several municipalities in the province to tell stories of women, folk traditions, collective memories and injustices that echo in everyday life. The narratives of Andrej Longo, the journey among the graves by Claudia Mandas, the reflections on new technologies by Franciscu Sedda, the testimony on the consequences of injustice offered by Cristiano Idini, the portrait of Emilio Lussu rendered by Gianluca Medas, Roberto Delogu’s pages on the weight of memories, Giampaolo Cassitta’s work on the role of women in the economic boom, up to Rita Nappi’s in-depth look at Sardinian healers, composed a coherent and passionate mosaic.

The Festival closed on 4 December  in Mores, Julia’s hometown, with the presentation of the book dedicated to Julia Carta by Antonietta Uras, accompanied by a theatrical monologue on the life of the woman condemned for witchcraft, written by Giampaolo Cassitta and performed by Roberta Campagna and Luca Fancello. A finale with strong symbolic value, recalling the project’s origin and renewing the commitment to keep alive a memory able to shed light on the present.

Thanks to the festival, the municipality of Siligo was welcomed into the national network of the “cities of witches”.
